    Interviewer. Hello, Mr. Avigdor Liberman.

    Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman. Hello.

Interviewer. Please tell me, can we bring true pressure on Sweden, aside from explanations and persuasion? For example, announcing that the Swedish foreign minister’s upcoming visit to Israel is not desirable, as Finance Minister Steinitz proposed?

Minister Liberman. I believe it’s important that we always stick with the facts and make public opinion face reality, in both Sweden and all of Europe. Hiding behind freedom of speech, the Swedish government is hypocritically playing a double game here. Most outrageous is not that Swedish government has never denounced this publication, this shameful slander in the spirit of the Beilis case and the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, but rather that it reprimanded the Swedish Ambassador to Israel, who did denounce this anti-Semitic article. Furthermore, in 2005-2006, when the caricatures of Mohammed were published, then Foreign Minister of Sweden Mrs. Freiwalds made apologies to the Muslim world, and also wrote a special letter to President Masoud Barzani to apologize again and to explain that this incident severely violated freedom of speech. Moreover, the same Aftonbladet that published this disgraceful slander refused to publish the Mohammed caricatures, with the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs making every effort to close down the rightwing website that posted them.

    Interviewer. Double standards?

Minister Liberman. Not just that. At the last Davis Cup between Israel and Sweden, the municipal authorities in Malmo chose to close the stadium so that the public could not watch the game. By the way, Israel won. Furthermore, let’s take England, which is the greatest democracy in the world – several months ago, MK Zilber was trying to visit after he had posted his film about Islam on the Internet. He was not allowed to enter England. These double standards, which are unfortunately very popular today in Western Europe, especially in Scandinavian countries, cannot be ignored by Israel. By the way, last week, Norway announced this year as the year of Knut Hamsun, the Nobel Prize-winning author who ardently admired fascism. In 1943, he passed his Nobel Prize on to Goebbels, and in 1945 he wrote an obituary of Hitler claiming that Hitler was a great fighter for the future of humanity. All of this is contemptible. Fortunately, Sweden’s best diplomats have always acted contrary to their government. That’s exactly what the current Swedish Ambassador to Israel, Mrs. Elizabeth Borsiin Bonnier, has done. Raoul Wallenberg, in his day, also acted contrary to his government and his superiors. This situation is worrisome to us, and we will react sternly to all and any such events.

I’m not sure whether we can directly act against Sweden. Everything that we have already done has caused turmoil in Sweden and abroad. But to break diplomatic relations with Sweden or withdraw our ambassador today, with Sweden at the head of the EU? I think that would be too much. We are not looking for any more international conflicts, but we still have to state our position expressly and unambiguously.

As the continued comments on this blog demonstrate the ugly affair initiated by the AB has not yet gone away. Unfortunately it is an affair that has tarnished Sweden’s reputation abroad. I’m a Swedish academic living overseas and I have already been asked by fellow academics how so blatantly flawed and prejudiced an article could have been published in as progressive a country as ours. Whether we like it or not we are being looked at as anti-semites primarily because nobody has spoken out publically against this article. The only media coverage is various government officials who say ”freedom of the press” but offer no other conciliatory voices.

Well unfortunately the pendulum swings both ways so we are now being portrayed as a country with an incompetent and biased media which is full of racists willing to believe articles like this. Good job us.

Whether or not Carl Bildt has stood up to Israel or not (clap your hands if you must) he has really done nothing to stave off Sweden’s reputation being damaged.

Well, to start with, you should tell your fellow academics that AB is a socialist tabloid gutter newspaper whose majority shareholder is the Swedish Trade Union Confederation (LO) which in turn finances the Swedish Socialist Party. We still have not heard one single word of comment from either LO-Wanja or Mona Sahlin concerning this crazy story.

lol, by Jews abroad maybe, yes. But who cares?

Normal, sane, rational and democratic people understands very well that the Swedish government has done nothing wrong. They can see through all this, and what they see is the Israeli extreme right government with its ultra-nationalistic foreign minister Lieberman making a fool of Israel and himself. Sweden can not and should excuse itself for having democratic values and freedom of the press. If Israel don’t like this, they can go to hell. And the whole Western world knows this too.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Sunday said he feels regret, sorrow and disapproval for a comedy show that mocked Christian theology and offended the Vatican.

Government spokesman Mark Regev said Olmert told ministers at a cabinet

Broadcast recently on a late-night show on the private Channel 10 TV station, the segment mocked the belief that Mary was a virgin and that Jesus walked on water.

The skit was a sarcastic response to the Vatican’s rehabilitation of a
Catholic bishop who denied the Holocaust took place. The host later apologized for causing offense.

Why not this: ”glömt hur de dödade barn i Gaza ” ?

I forgot to say earlier in my 3:40 posting that it’s also an amazing coincidence that the article in socialist-controlled Aftonbladet was published just two weeks before Carl Bildt’s official visit to Israel in the beginning of September. Explain that also to your academic friends.

    tg46,

I see you like conspiracy theories.

If there was a conspiracy 1st of all Jews would have been involved and 2nd it would be published the weekend just before the visit. Since it was published 3 weeks before the visit your FM can still issue a condemnation and be done with it.

I would note that the timing of the publication was after the Rabbi arrested in NJ. You see this is not at all an antisemitic story – it is ”only a story about IDF” but somehow after a Jewish Rabbi was arrested for organ trafficking the story (from 1992) is reprinted in 2009.

Why this anger? Now you have proof. Based on palestinian mothers and AB, American Jews trade with stolen organs of palestinians who were killed by the Israeli Defence Forces 19 years ago. Only the clever Jews can get away with selling human organs as old as that. True or not, no smoke without fire.

Ofcourse, Carl Bildt should stand firm behind ”freedom of speach”. No question about that. In particular, he must defend such important oppinions, and the expressions of the antisemitic culture as put forward in AB. Indeed, if the Jews are insulted, we can go to hell.

Were I Carl Bildt, I would be proud to be brought in front of ”konstitutionsutskottet” for in rage condemning the antisemitic culture as represented and defended in AB.

  18. northlander5 skriver:

    tg46,
It quite frankly doesn’t matter if the AB is considered a socialist gutter tabloid by us Swedes. The rest of the world does not know that. Read how other media outlets like the BBC for example are reporting on this story. That is primarily what foreign consumers of information are using to formulate their opinions.

    As for ”allnamesarealreadytaken”….
”lol, by Jews abroad maybe, yes. But who cares.”

No, but sane and educated people in the international community are formulating opinions about Sweden’s supposed stance on anti-semitism by our government’s refusal to declare whether nor not this article is representative of its views. However, I’ll assume given your rather racially charged comments previously that you are blissfully unaware and apathetic to that.

Furthermore, it would not be an infringement on the freedom of the press for our government to declare that the AB article is in no way representative of its views.

I agree that standing up to Israel and not backing down may be popular back home, but CB is also responsible for the maintenance of diplomatic relations and upholding Sweden’s reputation abroad.

There is nothing that remotely censors the press in Sweden by having our government distance itself from what is an obviously unsubstantiated and inflammatory accusation of Israel the article the AB chose to publish.

Although I really don’t think this ”issue” will have any long term effects some of the vitriol people are writing here is a disappointing representation of what we have to offer. We can do better.

How hard can this be to understand? A year ago all swedes were anti-islamic because of the publication of the ”Mohammed Dogs” in a newspaper. There were many ambassadors from different countries that demanded an apology from the swedish government. The answer that time was the same as that today; the government shall not and ARE NOT ALLOWED to tell the press or the people what to say or what not to write, unless it is a clear case of law offence. Today all swedes are anti-semitic just because of what one person has written in a newspaper. My suggestion is: sue the reporter or the newspaper! There are legal systems for dealing with libel.
