Vilnius 13 januari

    – katedralen,
    – nationalmuseet,
    – promenad i gamla stan,
    – handla konsthantverk i gamla stan (perfekta presenter).

INCREASING THE VALUE OF THIS BLOG

I understand from the comments raised on my entry of January 12 (4:15) under ‘Klart för Tchad’ that a need is seen to “increase the value of this blog”, for example by encouraging the many visitors to participate in the debate related to the subject raised by the minister of foreign affairs.

I also understand that the main purpose of the blog is to deepen the public’s understanding of the various subjects and issues and to give Carl Bildt and his staff the opportunity to take note of any useful information and ideas. My interest in this particular blog is driven by my longstanding relationship with Sweden and a general appreciation of the potential for Sweden to enhance further its important standing in the world.

I would therefore like to make the following suggestions concerning the blog, some of which Carl Bildt may wish to consider (I post this under ‘Vilnius’ in lack of a better place):

    1. Discipline. The participants could be more disciplined on how they make their comments (i.e. relevant to the overall subject; less lengthy chat, more concrete substance; and fewer entries per person). It is often difficult to get an overview and spot a key issue, which no doubts turns off many visitors and potential commentators (ref. my earlier 4:15 entry at ‘Klart for Tchad’ and similar remarks by other participants). In comparison for example, the many and highly divers comments published at http://www.lefigaro.fr are all relevant to the subject article.

    2. Software. The software of the blog could be modified to allow a participant to put another person on ‘Ignore’ (which would make all of that person’s entries under the overall subject invisible only for the one activating ‘Ignore’. Yahoo! Finance uses such a mechanism for its many stock message boards, as well as the opportunity to rate an entry from Awful to Excellent visible for all (e.g. http://messages.finance.yahoo.com/mb/ABB). It works. If WordPress.com would be unable to provide such features, Carl Bildt could consider using a state-of-the-art blog platform, apparently justified by the 2.33 million hits (in 2007?).

    3. Subjects. The overall subjects could usefully focus more on the external information and less on the travelling, meetings and other activity of the foreign minister himself (a shift which already seems to have taken place since the start of the new year). The credibility of the blog would be strengthened further by removing the top menu items Bildt Net and Bildt Comments (http://www.bildt.net and its link to http://bildt.blogspot.com are out-of-date).

    Best regards,

    2. Software. The rules of posting could be clarified (e.g. any maximum entry length and hyperlink references). Moreover, the software of the blog could be modified to allow a participant to put another person on ‘Ignore’ (which would make all of that person’s entries under the overall subject invisible only for the one activating ‘Ignore’. tahnks for the condensenting advice. While it’s cute to get information I would still think it’s a bit like believing in Santa Klaus to ask it from those who comment here. They may or may not have detailed information and viewwes…and many comments on the traveling an dinners of Carl Bildt because he has a tendency to write a lot about that instead of the more substantial content of his work (and this is after all his blog where he chose write and let people comment all depending on posters’ interest, knowledge or whatever). I don’t believe he’s so niggardly though that he expects people who post here do the work he is being paid to do so though.

1/ Every subjekt, every tree, has brenches. Even if the entry seems to be far away from the subject, there is in most cases a trail back to the headline through other entries.

2/You don´t need an ”Ignore” button to ignore an entry or person.

3/ I actually like the mix of common details in a ministers daily life and and some substantial content of his work. One must have in mind, that there isn´t much he can speak about in detail from his political negotiations.

  8. jeandebeaumont skriver:

    Lillies,

The advice is not meant to be condensenting. I was invited by some of the earlier commentators under ”Tchad” to provide some ideas on the opportunity to widen the participation in the blog and increase its value.

Do you agree with this need/opportunity in general, and do you have some better ideas on the purpose of the blog and how to improve its value?

  9. Bo W. Höglund skriver:

Ours is not to reason why, Jean, and to increase the value of the blog is not our business, but the owners, if he thinks it is needed!

AND, value is a relative concept – my definition, specially late at night, is probably not the same as yours.

Selfappointed, selfstyled and selfimportant moderators are NOT what is particularly lacking in this blog, as in many other blogs!

On the other hand, common courtesy dictates that we should TRY to comment, as far as possible on the issue at hand, dvs försöka att hålla oss till Vilnius och denna för oss så näraliggande och viktiga del av världen.

    jeandebeaumont,

You bring good ideas to the table, though I believe to the wrong table. This is merely a free blogg where Carl Bildt adds posts on whatever he feels is important at the time. The software of choice is wordpress, as supposed to a blogg organized by the government. It is easy to sign up, easy to comment, easy to get involved. I think these are core values of the blogg. What you are looking for could be an official online debate room. From what I know many newspapers and sometimes think-tanks have online debates where rules are stricter.

    Best,

Agree totally with your response. Let this blog-site remain an open market for all kinds of opinions, how odd and weird they may be. Opinions related to the topic CB has chosen are preferred, but don´t ban other meaningful issues, as this seems to be the ultimate success of this site.

Varför använda engelskan då ni kommunicerar med sign. ”jeandebeaumont”?
Självklart ingen viktig fråga men I just wonder ……………………………

    Jeandebeaumont,

Well…you have already received above intellectual responses about your suggestions. I agree to all of them.

I just want to add that ”to blog” – as Carl Bildt does – is voluntarily, his own free will – not because he has to.

In Sweden, he is the only one in the present government who is dedicated, almost everyday, to blog. A pioneer indeed.

My views, specially closure of embassies, are contradicted with his foreign political policies but I respect him anyway, and hoping that somehow, someday he might reconsider some of them not to mention my comments on different issues arised in this blog.

Thank you for taking your time!
